October

This morning the rain finally stopped so we could go for our morning walk (it poured last night). The sky was cobbled with grey clouds, with the occasional pothole of blue showing through. Surprisingly, the trees have not changed colour much. I had hoped for a good display this week!

The sun made a stronger appearance around 4:30 pm, almost time for it to dip out of sight. We did get out for another nice walk though, which included a visit with other campers. They like to go to the Gaspe (in Quebec) and made it sound so appealing - maybe we have a destination for 2014!

October BY ROBERT FROST

O hushed October morning mild,
Thy leaves have ripened to the fall;
Tomorrow’s wind, if it be wild,
Should waste them all.
The crows above the forest call;
Tomorrow they may form and go.
O hushed October morning mild,
Begin the hours of this day slow.
Make the day seem to us less brief.
Hearts not averse to being beguiled,
Beguile us in the way you know.
Release one leaf at break of day;
At noon release another leaf;
One from our trees, one far away.
Retard the sun with gentle mist;
Enchant the land with amethyst.
Slow, slow!
For the grapes’ sake, if they were all,
Whose leaves already are burnt with frost,
Whose clustered fruit must else be lost—
For the grapes’ sake along the wall.

Beguile is not a word in current use, but it is used in the Kristen Lavransdatter books. I have a really great paragraph to share with you from the second book, but maybe one long poem is enough so I will save it for tomorrow.

Sharon (The Odd Essay) commented the other day that they went full-timing without ever having RV'd before so it is possible! And they've been doing it for almost 12 years. Imagine being so footloose :-)

(We are watching Dr. Who "the Stone Angel" episode - it could be the scaryist one - I predict bad dreams tonight :-/ )

How glorious a greeting the sun gives the mountains! John Muir
