Our time in the mountains came to an end Friday morning. There just weren't sites to be had so we made a reservation back down in the Hat (and got the last site!), forcing us to turn East... We know now that next time we will plan at least a week in the mountains as there is so much to see. We didn't even do any of the hikes around the town.
The drive back to the Hat was an easy one, except the part through Calgary, where the TransCanada turns into 16 St (or is it Ave), and there are businesses right off the road. But we made it through without too much difficulty and was soon sailing down to the Hat. The road is wide, smooth and divided the whole way there.
As we drove, we watched the thermometer climb from 14C all the way up to 36C once we were 1/2 way here. Yowzers that's hot!
As soon as we were set up in our little site (not as great as the last one here - no satellite either – another long story) we had the air conditioning running. I checked my email, and there was a message from my Mom, saying that we were invited to cousin Doris & Ed's for supper at 5. We got our rears in gear with showers, walks for the dogs, etc. and made it there only a few minutes late.
I'm sure I haven't said it for a post or two, but Medicine Hat is a lovely town. I could live here - as long as I could go south in the winter!
We had a lovely dinner with Doris & Ed and my Mom & Dad. Doris is a fantastic hostess and has great stories to boot!
Today (Saturday) we slept in a bit, pottered around with morning stuff, took the dogs out for a good walk, then drove over to where my Mom & Dad are staying. As it turns out we passed them on the street on our way there. We dropped the truck off there and took their car over to MedAlta for some shopping, a stop at the church with the 14 stations of the cross and then a little tour around their old neighbourhood.
We picked up the truck then went to a little neighbourhood barber shop for Carm to get his wild and crazy scientist hair cut and run a few other errands. He is out at Costco right now getting some stuff.
There are a few things we want to do tomorrow (Red Rock Coolie), we'll finish our groceries and then Monday morning we are off to our next destination. We have a reservation at the Saskatchewan side of the Cypress Hills - East of here. I guess we are making the turn for home... reluctantly... we are having such a wonderful time out West... but turn East we must.
One ship drives east and other drives west by the same winds that blow. It's the set of the sails and not the gales that determines the way they go.
